A feature-length portrait of Cornwall’s last traditional fisherman, capturing the quiet dignity of a vanishing way of life and the enduring power of friendship, legacy and community.
In memory of our friend and mentor, Leo Kaserer.
The Last Fisherman tells the story of Malcolm, a 70-year-old man living and working on the Rame Peninsula in Cornwall, where he has fished alone for decades using methods passed down through generations. As the last of his kind in a once-thriving community, Malcolm represents a way of life now on the brink of extinction—one shaped by hard-earned knowledge, rhythm, patience, and a deep respect for the sea.
The film offers a slow, meditative look at his daily rituals—setting pots, mending nets, tending to his boat—and the changing world that surrounds him, from vanishing working-class communities to the rise of commercialised, fast-paced industry.
Filmed over several years, the documentary is also a tribute to the late Leo Kaserer, whose friendship with Malcolm helped shape the emotional heart of the film. Their unlikely bond, forged through shared values and quiet understanding, brings a human depth to the story—one that honours not just a tradition, but the relationships that give it meaning.
What emerges is a film about more than just fishing: it’s about purpose, resilience, and what remains when the world moves on. A meditation on time, place, and the dignity of a life lived in harmony with nature.
